The Giant Chasm and “Dragon” Force

While commonly known as the Giant Chasm, the place is also sited as the “Great Chasm” or the “Chasm of Light.” This is a reference to the fact that the Original Dragon, upon landing on Unova, was said to have protected the land from the meteor’s impact with a dome of brilliant light (Perhaps relating to its signature move, Barricade). The land here was said to be flowing with this energy, which could be seen in the cracks in the Chasm’s cavern walls and occasionally over water and soil. This ebb and flow of energy is said to correlate with with Unova’s period of famine and propserity.

This energy is referred to as “Dragon Force” in several ancient archives. The term itself is a bit controversial now, since people in academia debate whether Unova always had this energy prior to Vahirom’s appearance. The energy was never said to be exclusively for dragon-types or their kin…and other regions have described the same phenomena in different terms. It is most likely that the the Original Dragon was the first to tap into this power directly and use it for the revitalization of the land. Given how Vahirom was a being of energy or at least a Pokemon that could produce/use such energy, the dragon is credited to have either created or discoverd this.

But after the war and the split, the energy that the Vahirom had culled faded away from humanity, making the flow of the Dragon Force scarce and unpredictable. Even though the body left behind (Kyurem) still stayed in the Chasm, the cracks began to be filled with ice instead. This permafrost over the area is still present in modern day, aka the MoU timeline.

The Elemental Gems

One of the most well-known aspects of Unova is the prevalence of gems/jewels, which are type-enhancing minerals that can occasionally be found in Unovan caverns/dust clouds. When held/wielded by a Pokemon, the gem will power up a move that matches with the gem’s type. When this item comes in contact with the move in question, it will dissipate aka be consumed. Other than look like well-cut crystals, these special items are not like any other rock/minerals known in geology.

While the origins of these unusual gems are not known, ancient records speculated that these gems are remnants of the Dragon Force exuding from the earth into a more solid, specialized form. Ancient Unovans had noticed the abundance of such gems in caverns, and frequently mined them. Other than give it to their Pokemon companions to make them stronger, they also used the gems in weapon and armor forging. Incorporating these minerals was seen to offer elemental resistances, which made Unovan armor far more advanced than other civilizations (humans apparently could not “consume” the gems like Pokemon did). Plus, when a soldier has fallen, the armor/weapon pieces could be salvaged and be consumable fodder for Pokemon to use when they are executing their attacks.

Unfortunately, the art of gem incorporation has been largely lost in history.

FYI: I do realized there is 6th gen data for Fairy gems, but in my comic, Fairy types and Mega Evos do not exist. This is because I played/planned this nuzlocke around when BW was still new/the most current Pokemon game and because I am not going to bend more story elements to incorporate that (I did enough of it when BW2 came out). Plus, ORAS more or less said there is a universe where such things never happened, along with the XY lore.
