Nuzlocke White: The Trickster's Mirror

Description

Given that the Unovan legendaries (outside of the Tao Trio) have very little lore behind them, I made up my own little drabbles that I call them as "Unovan Folk Tales." Not sure if I will post more, but this one was mentioned in Issue #049 by Iris.

The Mirror of the Tricksters (commonly known as "The Trickster's Mirror")

A long time ago, there were three wild spirits of nature that lorded over the Unovan sky and land. The older brother Landorus had power over the earth, causing famine or bountiful harvests. The younger brothers Thunderus and Tornadus had power over the skies, bringing down rain and wind over the land. At first, these spirits used their powers on a whim, not caring whether their abilities caused good or harm. But upon a fervent wish by a beautiful dancer named Demetris, the older brother promised to cooperate with the humans.

But whenever Landorus was away, his younger siblings Thunderus and Tornadus would cause trouble by creating thunderstorms and hurricanes. Even worse, their ability Prankster made them near impossible to stop. Jenris Cerea, the grandchild of Demetris, was tired of the younger brothers’ antics and wished to find a way to stop them without having to look for Landorus, who would sometimes be away from the region to help others with their harvests. For many years, Jenris was unable to find an effective way to control the younger spirits, who would taunt them mercilessly.

So one day, Jenris quietly followed the spirits all across the region. During the long journey, they noticed that the two spirits avoided a certain merchant’s home. Intrigued, Jenris walked inside and found an old man selling mirrors. He claimed that he never had trouble with the two prankster spirits ever since he settled shop.

"Please sir, tell me how you were able to chase Thunderus and Tornadus away" Jenris pleaded.

"Take one of my mirrors," the merchant replied. "I think they might be helpful in warding them off."

Immediately, Jenris bought the largest mirror they found in the shop. Carrying their weapon, Jenris came face to face with Thunderus and Tornadus again. The two spirits laughed at them.

"Are you back again to stop us? Our older brother is not here to save you."

Instead of replying back, Jenris brought forth the mirror right up to the two, causing both Thunderus and Tornadus to transform right before Jenris’s eyes. Instead of being in their proud human-shaped forms, they transformed into beasts that wailed at the loss of their human-like form and their Prankster abilities. The two transformed spirits begged Jenris to change them back with the mirror, but they refused until the spirits promised to behave.

A week later, Landorus had returned to Unova. Jenris took this oppurtunity to ask about the mirror incident, and whether Landorus himself was averse to mirrors like his brothers. Upon hearing this, Landorus laughed.

"When we see our reflections, our bodies change between the human and beast-like forms. The only reason my brothers detest the mirror is because they are incredibly vain and enjoy the benefits that the human-form provides,” Landorus explained. “I have no preference myself, but those two percieve their beast-forms to be unsightly. That is probably why the mirror was effective in making them listen. I apologize for not telling you this sooner."

And from that day onward, Unovans who wished to avoid Thunderus or Tornadus’s antics would hang mirrors over their gates.

"It turns out the mirror forced them to look upon themselves... and when one gazes in the mirror, fears himself. The mirror reflects everyone..."

(It reminds me that I watched and finished Rival Destinies, then finished watching Adventures In Unova.)
